Page 266 Question #4

Storage devices for typical computers systems are hard drive, and CD & DVD drives. Blueray drives are gaining in popularity as well. When you turn off your computer, the data stored in these devices remains. I personally like the Blueray drive. I like to burn CD's for music also movies as well. Desktops...

In a presentation in Dublin, Ireland in March 2010, Google sales chief Jim Haley stated that desktops would be irrelevant in three years (SiliconRepublic.com). Smartphones, notebooks, and the amount of information available online will converge to create a different kind of future than what we’ve known.

I would have to agree with him, because right now you can do pretty much everything on Smartphones, notebooks & computers. Doctor offices use them in the the office to keep track of everyone. Also smartphones are coming out with more & more. They have apps for just about everything now. Notebooks you can you use just about everywhere you go as well too.

System Software

                                                                                     Page 206
 1. There are two basic types of software on your computer, which are the Operating system and Utility programs.
· Operating system is the system software that controls the way in which a computer system functions, including the management of hardware, peripherals, and software.
· Utility program is a small program that performs many of the general housekeeping tasks for the computer, such as system maintenance and file compression.

2. Operating systems can be categorized by the type of device in which they are installed, such as robots and specialized equipment, mainframes and network computers, mobile devices and personal computers.
RTOS software program this type of operating system is a program with specific purpose, and it must guarantee certain response times for particular computing tasks: otherwise, the machine is useless.
You also encounter real-time operating systems in everyday life. They are in devices such as fuel-injection system in car engines, inkjet printers, VoIP phones, and some medical devices, as well as common appliances such as washing machines, dryers, and furnaces.
Television stations use robotic camera with real-time operating systems that glide across a suspended cable system to record sports events from many angles.
Simple cell phones are separate, single function devices; they only require operating systems that perform one task at a time. Cell phones have their own proprietary embedded operating systems.
Network operating system enables more than one user to access the computer system at one time by efficiently handling and prioritizing requests from multiple users.
UNIX is a multiuser, multitask operating system used as a network operating system, primarily with mainframs, although it is also often found on PCs.
Operating systems in smartphones, the most common operating systems that can be found on smartphone include;
· Symbian by Nokia
· BlackBerry by RIM
· Windows Mobile by Microsoft
· iPhone OS by Apple
· Android by Google
· webOS by Palm
Gaming systems, like Microsoft's Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii, and the Sony PlayStation, as well as personal media players like Microsoft''s Zune, Apple's iPod, and SanDisk's Sansa, all require some form of customized system software that is developed specifically for the particulate device. The operating system on gaming consoles support Web browsing and file storage of media and photos as well as playing DVDs and games.
Windows is a powerful operating system that can support simple networking tasks. Over time, Windows improvements have concentrated on increasing user functionality and friendliness, improving Internet capabilities, and enhancing file privacy and security.

3. I’d have to say that the three of the most common operating systems are Mac OS, Microsoft Windows OS, and Linx.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

The main application software that I use is Microsoft word, just like everyone else I’m sure. It is one of the easiest ones to use, you can use to just for about everything. It is an application that is a word processor allowing people to use it many different ways. I use it for school when I have to write a paper it is easier then writing it out. It makes it easier for the teacher to read, since I have such bad handwriteing. Another advantage is using it to make stuff for different events. Being able to hand it out or hang them up.Such as lost pets or even events like a walk to raise money. My last advantage that I find in Microsoft word is that it helps you spell words correct, since Im bad at spelling sometimes. Sometimes if I’m not sure on a spelling I will open it up and type the word just to see if I spelled the word right.

Social Networking & Society

The advantages to social networking is that you can talk to family & friends at any time you want & not to have to worry about not knowing what is going on in their lives. You can also send out invites to parties & have people r.s.v.p. The disadvantage is going on facebook & having people that you don't like or don't talk too, see what is going on in your life & what you are doing when it's none of their business!

The positive effects social networking has as a whole is you can shop online, you can e-mail & talk with family & friends. You can get coupons & see what stores are having sales & more. The negative effects social networking has as a whole is credit card fraud, bulling, identity theft & a lot more.

Businesses use social networking to sell their products & get people to buy & like more. They can put up ads or even coupons to get people to come in & buy more. They can also go on & here fed-back from people about if they like or don't like the product.

I dont see social networking evolving in the next couple years, but I defintaly see it becoming bigger then what it is now. Which is hard to imagine how it could get any bigger then what it is now!
